This Grade ll listed Georgian townhouse houses a flourishing, independent lending library. Located in the centre of Nottingham, it is home to almost 50,000 books and many fine reading rooms spread over three floors connected by a traditional spiral staircase. The lighting was designed to enhance the historical features in this private members library.
A bespoke lighting solution
Lighting to shelves and joinery is a great architectural lighting tool and can be used for a variety of uses. Here bespoke low energy lights for the bookshelves were designed to provide illumination to the books, and discretely positioned to minimised visual intrusion.
The client wanted to discreetly introduce state of the art lighting and control without compromising on the historical surrounds and architecture.
Energy efficient concealed lighting on top of the shelving provides uplight and establishes a sense of space and height. Splendid decorative features reinforce the design style and character of the building.

Enhancing the decorative
details in the building
A feature chandelier was used to create a unique focal point, drawing your eye to the intricate details in the high ceiling, coves, and historic architecture. The chandelier provides a warm light offering visual comfort at the point where books are displayed and read.

A discrete framing projector was used to frame the feature artwork over the fireplace, improving illumination to pieces which revealed detail previously unseen.
Artwork lighting to create points of interest

A lighting control system was provided, giving precise control and flexibility to suit various purposes. Lighting can be dimmed down during dinners and informal events creating more subtle and relaxing effects. During meetings and formal events, lights can be set at a higher intensity to provide practicality.
A simple approach to this brief complements the timeless and elegant details of classic architecture and the historical townhouse.
