Situated in Birmingham, this event venue accommodates more than 500 events annually, attracting over 2.4 million guests. With 18 exhibition halls, 32 conference suites and a versatile outdoor space, it caters to events and exhibitions of various sizes and types.
We were asked to design a lighting scheme and control system, allowing the venue operators to easily maintain and control the lighting at different levels, in each of the exhibition halls.

Lighting to enhance networking spaces

Lighting plays a significant role in these networking spaces, it decides how a brand is presented at an exhibition stand, or how it is perceived by people. Appropriately lit areas can completely transform the way in which products are presented, enhancing their visual appeal creating an interactive experience. High output DALI dimmable LED luminaires were used providing general lighting to the halls, facilitating meaningful interactions between exhibitors and attendees.
Delivering appropriate levels of light into the exhibition halls, where individual exhibition stands would be displayed, was important in ensuring optimal illumination, enhancing the overall interactive experience.

Light not only increases visibility, but also delivers comfort and warmth to the busy environment, creating a suitable environment conducive to networking and exploration.
The lighting control system was designed specifically for convenience and ease of use, allowing non-technical staff to define the lighting scene from a custom 24-inch touchscreen interface. Touchscreen controls are an efficient method of lighting control, suitable for complex buildings, offering a wide range of control through a simple interface.

Touchscreen lighting control provides flexibility and ease of operation

At this project, the touchscreen control shows a simple graphic representation of each luminaire and its location in the hall, enabling non-technical users to select and adjust individual light levels within each exhibition hall, without needing to delve further into system programming.

Depending on the layout of the exhibition, the lighting may need to be set lower in some areas of an exhibition hall, to facilitate presentations and live workshops with stage lighting for example.
This can be defined through the touchscreen control, making it easy for non-technical users to raise and lower selected lighting circuit levels and then save system changes as lighting scenes, to be recalled later, or for use during a different event.

Zonal control for various requirements

Pre-set levels and scenes for daily usage or annual events, can be defined through the touchscreen control, providing ease of operation and smooth lighting performance in all the exhibition halls. The lighting control system also incorporated PIR movement sensors and was integrated with the Building Management System (BMS) to facilitate remote control of the system from a central location.
