We designed a bespoke lighting scheme for this super prime residential basement, transforming it into a stunning retreat of relaxation, wellness, and entertainment. The luxury basement is home to a swimming pool, a spa, a wine cellar, a cinema room, an entertainment and snooker room, and a gym; we considered different lighting techniques to illuminate each space accurately and connect the areas seamlessly.
Light creates a visually stunning spa retreat
To the swimming pool area, we concealed linear lighting in the ceiling to provide ambient lighting and enhance the colours and textures. Dimmable LED fittings, allow the client to soften the atmosphere, creating the ideal environment for evening relaxation. Bright lighting provides illumination to the perimeter of the swimming pool, opening the space, making it appear bigger. Dimmer and warmer lighting creates a more relaxed ambience, adding depth and drama to the space.
Above the relaxation spa, concealed linear lighting was used within a ceiling coffer providing a cool and serene feel to the space. In addition to warm white lighting, various coloured lighting can be set to aid relaxation or enhance entertainment.
Colour changing lights within the swimming pool and spa provide an additional lighting feature to complement the space or add an accent.
Practical lighting design for a home gym is important; making sure it is well lit increases activity and brightens the mood of a room. We used unobtrusive, bright, and dimmable light fixtures to complement the functions of the space and adapt to various uses and requirements.
Elegant and practical lighting
A mix of warm and cool lighting was used in the sauna and steam room creating a spa-like retreat, to enhance relaxation and rejuvenation.
Using cool lighting in the steam room subtly highlights the blue mosaic tiling, providing a cool glow of light into the space. It was important to use warm lighting in the sauna and treatment room to create the ultimate, relaxing spa experience. Concealed linear lighting, creates a warm and calm ambience, highlighting the wooden wall coverings providing the perfect spa-like atmosphere.
The basement complex includes a home cinema, where we used warm, emotive colours to establish the right amount of drama to enhance the viewing.
Warm lighting delivers an immersive home theatre experience
Concealed linear lighting provides a warm glow of light that can be dimmed down subtly, allowing for gradual adjustment of the eyes. Using dimmable warm lighting is paramount to creating a truly authentic cinematic experience. Simple to use elegant keypads, allow the client to control the ambience of the cinema room effectively with the ability to program lighting scenes to raise the lighting level if the film is paused.
The cinema room is connected to an entertainment room, where we used concealed linear lighting to the ceiling coffers, to provide illumination to the snooker table, wooden flooring, and the picture frames.
Using glare free, bright light in this area, allows the individual areas within the open plan room to be visually separated.
In the bespoke wine cellar, we used a layered lighting approach to create the perfect dramatic impact, helping the space appear taller and deeper.
Using LED linear lighting to the shelf allows for appropriate illumination, creating a contrast between light and shadow. We used concealed light fittings to draw attention to the materials without any glare or harsh shadows.
Creating the ultimate dramatic impact
Throughout this basement complex, the lighting is controlled by a lighting control system. This allows preset lighting scenes, moods and colours to be simply controlled by a single button press ensuring the perfect atmosphere can be achieved easily.
